Parents Guide: PlayStation 4 overview

PlayStation 4 Controller

Are you considering a PlayStation 4 for your child? Below I have given an overview of some of the pro’s and con of a PlayStation 4 for your child.

What is a PlayStation 4?

PlayStation 4 (PS4) is the current games console made by Sony. Sony has been dominating the games console market for the last for 23 years since the release of the original PlayStation. When the original PlayStation was release it was groundbreaking technology and the PlayStation 4 is no different. Currently Sony make 2 version of the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Who is the PlayStation 4 for?

PlayStation 4 is suitable for children aged 5 and up. There are plenty of games suitable for the younger gamer, although I think PlayStation 4 is better suited for 10 years and up. If you are looking for a console for a younger gamer, then I would also look at the Nintendo Switch.

What are the PlayStation 4 specs?

Optical Drive – Bluray

Network – Ethernet (1GbE), Wi-Fi (b,g,n), Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)

TV Output – HDMI (Supports 1080p)

What are the PlayStation 4 Pro specs?

CPU – x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores

GPU – 4.2 TFLOPS, AMD next-generation Radeon™ based graphics engine

Memory – GDDR5 8GB

Optical Drive – Bluray

PlayStation 4 parental considerations

PlayStation 4 has some great features for parents including options to limit spend (PlayStation Store) restrictions based on PEGI rating and the ability to limit screen time. this makes it a lot easier to restrict usage and helps stopping your children playing when they shouldn’t be.

As with all games consoles these days, they are connected to the internet. As with any internet connected device, I recommend you not only monitor your child’s online activity, but also educate you child about safe internet usage. When creating your child’s PlayStation account it will ask you for date of birth. The PlayStation network does restrict game usage online to age appropriate games based on the date of birth entered.

Should I get my child a PlayStation 4?

A PlayStation 4 is a great games console and you cant go far wrong by purchasing one! There are 3 main contenders in the games console market at the moment, Sony (PS4, PS4 Pro), Microsoft (Xbox One, Xbox One X) and Nintendo (Switch). A Nintendo Switch is great for the younger gamer or for family gaming, but it is in 3rd place for older gamer.

Is the PlayStation 4 better than a Xbox One? To be honest they are both good choices and there isn’t much in it. It is more down to games your child wants to play, as some games are only available on PS4 and vice versa. If your child is going to be playing online, it is also worth considering which console their friend have. As it isn’t possible to play online across the different platforms.

So PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro? Don’t get me wrong, the PlayStation 4 is a great console! But for the more serious gamer it is worth considering the PlayStation 4 Pro as the Graphics are next level! Although, to benefit from the graphics fully you need a 4K TV.
